Chicken Nugget Rant
Friday, January 22, 2010 at 1:31PM As I walked through the lunch room this past Thursday attempting to get a lunch for myself, I stumbled across this enormous line. I joined it to see what the commotion was about. I half expected a roller coaster to be at the end due to the length of the line. As I approach the end of the line, I am asked to grab a tray, and am given five chicken nuggets on a white styrofoam plate.
This experience that I just described to you is what is known in Perrysburg High School as "chicken nugget day." I am a senior this year in the high school, and I have experienced this so called "chicken nugget day" since my sophomore year. For some reason the school's chicken nuggets seem to be a huge hit among the students here. I'm not exactly sure what addicting substance these nuggets are laced with, but it seems to keep the students lined up for the entire lunch period to get them.
I have seen kids walking happily away from that hour long line with stacks of over priced "chicken" on their trays. Sadly, I have to admit I have taken part in this weekly homage through the nugget line once or twice, and to be honest, I wasn't all that pleased with the outcome of my extensive waiting. The five nuggets, mashed potatoes, and milk that cost me $2.50 was not much of a lunch. If you want more than the standard five nuggets expect to pay an extra $1.75 per five nuggets.
I have yet to figure out exactly what it is that keeps the students coming back to this cedar point length line other than habitual line waiting. The theory that "well, this is a big line, the lunch must be good" seemingly keeps the kids coming back for more every week. If you couldn't tell by now, I do not enjoy the chicken nuggets here at the school, nor do I appreciate the outrageous pricing on under par food. This McDonalds equivalent of chicken that the school serves for twice the price is anything but tasty.
During my 3 years of experiencing chicken nugget day, I have found only two good things about it. The first good thing that comes from chicken nugget day is the mashed potatoes that substitute for french fries. These "potatoes" are great. They are the one thing that would be worth such an ominous wait on nugget days. The only other good thing that comes from "chicken nugget day" is the shorter lines everywhere else. The massive concentration in one line, leaves the other 3 lunch lines virtually empty, thus allowing the few of us that aren't addicted to these nuggets more time to eat and enjoy our lunches.
Because of all the negatives about the school's chicken nuggets, I am giving your weekly gathering known as "chicken nugget day" two massive thumbs down. Please do not let this rant discourage you from eating your addicting nuggets. I would still like to have at least one day during the week where I don't have to worry about the lines, and where I can sit, enjoy and taste my lunch.
