Movie Review: Shutter Island

Some have said that the previews to this movie gave away all the suspenseful and exciting parts of the film. Those critics could not have been more wrong.
Set in the 1950’s at a U.S. territorial island for the world’s most criminally insane patients, Leonardo DiCaprio plays the role of a U.S. Marshall on a mission to find a missing patient. As he investigates the case, he becomes aware of the shady operations and management practices of the authorities on the island. He becomes overwhelmed with having an underground investigation of his own on trying to bust the authorities on Shutter Island.
This movie has so many intense, jumpy scenes that keep viewers on the edge of their seats for the entire 2hr and 31min duration. All the makeup done on the “crazy” characters really adds to the graphic, thematic elements that viewers are looking for.
The plot is unparalleled and the most intriguing thought provoking movie plot I have ever witnessed. As a viewer, from the preview, which provides all the knowledge of the plot, I came into the movie on Leonardo’s side hoping to see him bust the unethical practices of the island. During the movie everyone in the theatre is on the same thought line. The plot of Shutter Island has such a brilliant twist to it and it slowly transforms the viewer’s opinions of the characters and leaves them totally amazed.
Many people are drawn back because they think it is a scary, horror-type film. Shutter Island is more of a plot based, suspense, or thrilling film with the graphic elements that make it appealing to the more hardcore viewers.
I would give this movie 5 stars and seeing it again is high on my list of things to do. It’s a great mix of The Game and The Truman Show giving it an excellent mix of many thematic elements that can appeal to anyone. Not to mention the twist that leaves you as mentally twisted as one of the patients on Shutter Island….
